Twelve week trial for football coaching scheme

Tue 15 May 2007

A new football coaching scheme is being offered to young players aged 8 to 18, by St Albans City and District Council in partnership with local housing associations and Watford Football Club, who will provide professional coaches.

Sessions will cost only 20 pence and the aim is to encourage healthy, active lifestyles as well as providing an alternative place to go. However places are limited to thirty players at each location and these will be allocated on a first-come, first-served basis.

The trial scheme will run for twelve weeks. However if it is successful and if further funding becomes available, it could be extended on a long term basis, with teams playing each other in an inter-community football league.

The cost is low to ensure that the scheme is accessible to everyone, regardless of background. The aim is to enable youngsters to realise their potential, develop self-confidence and gain an understanding of citizenship.

This scheme will be available at the following locations 5pm ¡V 7pm:-

  • Tuesday 22nd May at Brocket View Playing Field off the Marford Road Wheathampstead.
  • Wednesday 23rd May at the playing field at the rear of St Albans Hospital, off Lavender Crescent, St Albans.
  • Thursday 24th May at Marlborough playing field, Cottonmill Lane (access via Old Oak), St Albans.
The existing London Colney football scheme will continue on Wednesday evenings, but has now moved to Shenley Lane playing field for the summer months.

For further information contact Tony Clark at St Albans District Council, Anti-Social Behaviour Unit on 01727 819566.
