Council signs up to Respect Standard

Wed 14 Mar 2007

The District Council is pleased to report that they have achieved the government's Respect Standard for Housing Management.

The Respect Standard is a series of 6 voluntary commitments reflecting how the Council will deal with complaints of anti-social behaviour. These are by:-

  • Keeping residents up to date with the status of their complaint
  • Providing a service that meets the demands of residents
  • Tackling problems early
  • Supporting witnesses
  • Providing intervention to try and tackle the causes of the behaviour
  • Taking strong enforcement action
The Council is committed to resolving anti-social behaviour in every case that is reported, with an approach that combines enforcement with intervention and support. Strong action is taken against offenders, but where methods such as parenting support may work, these are tried at the same time.

The Council would also like to stress that it is not always necessary for witnesses to give their name and address when reporting incidents. The Council's Anti-Social Behaviour Unit has won several cases where none of the witnesses had to attend Court and all witnesses remained anonymous.

The Council's Anti-Social Behaviour Co-ordinator Neil Kieran said: 'I am pleased we have now achieved the Respect standard. Residents can take this as an assurance that in every case reported to us we try to resolve the problem using all possible methods.'

Reports of anti-social behaviour can be made to 819416, 819566, or e-mailed to n.Kieran@stalbans.gov.uk.
