New rangers are back in the parks
Tue 06 Mar 2007
Park Rangers have returned to Verulamium Park, Clarence Park and Rothamsted Park, as part of the new contract between St Albans City and District Council and John O'Conner Ltd, which began in January 2007.
Part of their duties will include acting as a deterrent against anti-social behaviour and providing a friendly face, who can answer questions about the park.
The new rangers can be recognised by their clothing, which will say 'Park Ranger' on the back.
Other benefits of the new contract will include the introduction of green measures within the parks, such as:-
- The recycling of green waste.
- Applying mulch to flower beds to reduce watering and minimise the growth of weeds, without using chemicals.
- Initiatives to reduce packaging, such as bulk buying gardening material by the truck load instead of lots of individually wrapped plastic packs.
- Buying from local suppliers whenever possible, thus supporting local businesses and cutting down the travel mileage for goods.
Cllr Sheila Burton, Portfolio Holder for Sport and Healthy Living, commented:
"I am particularly pleased that we have been able to bring back the Park Rangers. This crucial role was axed some years ago, when the Council privatised its grounds and parks maintenance services. Residents will be able to identify the Ranger easily, consult him on many topics and work with him to reduce petty vandalism."
Matt O'Conner, Managing Director of John O'Conner commented: 'We are delighted to have retained this contract maintaining our continued partnership with St Albans City and District Council. We believe the introduction of the Park Rangers to be one of many excellent enhancements.'
